Essay Openings to Use and to Steer Clear from

Nobody cares a dime about you and your ramblings. That is what professional writers (especially copywriters and journalists) say about the way people read. Nobody cares a dime about the author and his astonishing personality traits – they want to be interested in what they read. And if you fail to grasp the reader’s attention with the very first phrase you write, chances are, he will not go on reading. One may say that in case of essays you receive as an assignment it is not all that important – after all, your tutor has to read them. But isn’t it better to make him want to do it? Hookers and Chasers Beginnings can be divided into two types – in terminology used by Stephen King, they are â€Å"hookers† and â€Å"chasers†. Hookers are the beginnings that immediately catch the eye and are interesting in and of themselves. It may be something that makes the reader stop in his tracks in shock, amazement or disbelief. Something he rereads once again just to make sure he understood correctly what is written. Something like the title of the essay in which Stephen King described them: â€Å"Great Hookers I Have Known†. Taking into consideration another, less contextual meaning of the word, this title makes you want to make sure you’ve understood it correctly. And read on. On another end of sliding scale of quality there are chasers – trite, bland, boring beginnings that do nothing to make you want to read further. Beginnings to Avoid like Plague Clichà ©s. â€Å"It is common knowledge†, â€Å"You probably know†, â€Å"It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say†. They reek of commonplace, and it is very hard to believe that there is something more exciting to come. Referring to the assignment in question: â€Å"When I received the task to write about the most memorable experience of my childhood†¦Ã¢â‚¬ . Announcements: â€Å"In this essay I will describe†¦Ã¢â‚¬  It looks helpless and shows that you didn’t know how to begin. Quotes from dictionaries or encyclopedias. Another beginning that shows that you have no idea how to get to the point. Probably the most widely used and, therefore, to be avoided even more than all the other types. Hooker wannabes – it is what happens when you try to amaze the reader but either cannot logically connect the initial shocking statement to the main text or just happen to make the rest of the essay look boring and uninteresting in comparison. Read your own beginning as if you see it for the first time and ask yourself: would you be interested in reading further if it was written by somebody else? If not – you are doing something wrong.

Media violence: why it is bad for children Violence can be seen everywhere even when we are not looking for it. Specifically on television, video games, and on the web. Something as simple as turning on the television and watching the morning news can even portray some violence. Many experts have debated over whether violent media has any effect on a child’s behavior. I think that many people don’t see this as an issue. Possibly because we have integrated violence as a part of society. But I feel that excessive exposure to violent media will have negative effects on a child’s psychological health and well-being. According to the American Psychological association â€Å"Ninety-seven percent of adolescents age 12-17 play video games — on a computer, on consoles suc h as the Wii, PlayStation and Xbox, or on portable devices such as Gameboys, smartphones and tablets.† That’s an outstanding number of children who play games so what kind of issue does this arise. So much has been said to contradict that violent games like for example â€Å"grand theft auto† don’t have any effect on behavior of children when in fact it does. According to Andrea Norcia, M.A â€Å"Children are more likely to imitate the actions of a character with whom they identify. In violent video games, players participate as a character, and even choose which weapons they’ll use while fighting other characters.† Kids will become aggressive playing too much violent games, they get into their character and usually move up levels which makes them feel rewarded almost like a cycle. They’ll play feel happy and rewarded and keep playing. Games like grand theft auto are so violent they portray characters beating up anyone who comes their way to reach the goal. They are shooting and killing innocent people in the game with no remorse. I’ve seen some of my nephews play the game they get into it as if they are the actual character screaming, yelling at the TV. It is interesting to see. A Film “Glory Road”, Based On A True Story Features A Coach,

A film â€Å"Glory Road†, based on a true story features a coach, Don Haskins, who is a basketball coach for the Western Texas Miners. The movie takes place in 1965, Haskin is going against the society’s standards of leading African Americans players to play basketball in college. At the beginning of the movie, Don Haskin struggles to build a good basketball team because no players want to play at a no name school. He doesn’t care about skin color like the society does, but instead, he wants to recruit good players and he looked around for African-American basketball players because he wants to win the NCAA finals and he knew they wouldn t get recruited and he had limited scholarship offers. In the middle of the movie, Haskin’s team is traveling to play in the NCAA tournament. At the airport, he is stopped by a reporter and he asks why he is playing so many African American players. The reporter is implying how a team with mostly only African American players can’t win the championship. In addition, he asked if they are smart enough to handle the mental strain they’ll face in the tournament. Haskin looks displease when the reporter asked him this question. He answered this question, saying his team is just the same as any other team in the league. By asking the question if the African American can handle at the national level, demonstrates they are not smart enough to handle the mental strains. Would, Alice in Chains addition to the Singles movie soundtrack, finishes the album in strong fashion, making sure that you stick around for the final question, If I would, could you? Now that they are no longer a novelty, Alice in Chains is finally receiving the respect that denied before Nirvana brought grunge to the mainstream. With Dirt, they have placed themselves on top of the Seattle music scene with groups like Pearl Jam, Nirvana, and Soundgarden. Its about time. Maybe someday people will stop singing Nirvanas praises and start remembering who brought grunge to the people groups like Alice in Chains. n

Individuals with high verbal intelligence showed excellent oratory skills and will be able to communicate well with difference persons in the community. This information can be enhanced by lecturers by them encouraging group discussions, debates, play words, etc. Verbal information is needed in all learning institutions or environment to enable better communication and avoid any misunderstanding among the learners themselves and their tutors. Logical/Mathematical Logical intelligence is the ability to reason critically and get a decision of a problem. People with this intelligence have the capacity to solve problems by analyzing them and getting the permanent solution required. This information is essential to students as they learn to enable them critical decisions and also allow them to pass in their studies. Teachers can encourage this by promoting the use of programmed computer language, critical decision activities, etc. Visual/Spatial Visual intelligence is the ability to see things clearly and interpret them according to without any disparity. People who exhibit this intelligence are very creative and imaginative. Arises from their capacity to learn from visual media for example movies, pictures, and videos with ease. These only denote the ability to see something and make a better rational judgment. People with this intelligence imagine things, pretend about things and most of the time day dream (Barry, 1997). Bodily/Kinesthetic These are the knowledge shown by people through the sensation they feel in their body. They include the ability of people to dance well, body stature that makes some people muscular and well suited for certain games and sports. Individuals with this skill can manipulate their body to their advantage and achieve high results. Teachers can enhance this by encouraging body language in the learning process and also students' involvement in physical exercises (Pishghadam, 2009). Naturalistic Naturalistic intelligence is depicted by an individual ability to identify the things in the environment with ease. It is a capacity to master plants, animals, and minerals well in a unique way. These are the knowledge of the environment around you. People with this intelligence are great thinkers and show high skills and aware of the environment around them. Musical Intelligence These are the ability of an individual to know and use musical instruments with ease. People possessing this information can play different musical instruments well. These people can interpret tones, rhythm, musical pitches, timbre to be able to compose music. The sound is useful to enable one has real musical intelligence. The teachers should facilitate this information by incorporating music in the students learning a process and encouraging them to create lyrics of the studies learned in the classes (Cope Mayer, 1996). Interpersonal The ability to associate well with others in the learning institutions is critical. Interpersonal intelligence enables one know the emotions, moods and likes and dislikes of other people. These ensure good personal relationship with the other people. A person with this skill can relate well with other people and little misunderstanding with them. Teachers can encourage by teaching the students how to connect with each other and the benefits of healthy relationships. Intrapersonal Intrapersonal intelligence is the ability of a person to understand oneself. These can be regarding likes and dislikes, different moods and abilities in various aspects. It will guide a person to do things they like and can avoid difficulties and emotional stress. The ability of a person to understand oneself makes him not collide with others in his operations and able to have a better decision for problems. The more one knows himself the most advantageous it is in the execution of different duties. Teachers should motivate their students to be aware of themselves and have high personal esteem. As a student, these visual and musical intelligence skills will help me know the career to take whether musical or mathematical depending on my ability to learn with ease. I should also see how other students carry out their activities to be successful in their careers Identify opportunities and check strengths and weaknesses of others Having job connections after my career will mean good networking. Being competitive to the other students and getting good grades means that I have accessed and evaluated their abilities and perfected them. 4 Self-managing Self-awareness Personal power Knowing ones ability and capability As a student I should choose a career am able to achieve better results for guarantee of jobs in future. Identify ones abilities and weaknesses. Good grades will mean am aware of what am capable and I have taken the best career. 5 Creative Proactive It entails being active in doing things One of the best way to do well as a student is ensuring that am creative and innovative in my career by ensuring that am in the forefront in execution of activities. Research to be creative and innovative Great achievements in exams will mean that am active in doing things and am keen in my work. Employees and Employers Obligations Employers are required by the Australian law to ensure that the working conditions for the employees are favorable and conducive to enable them to work comfortable. The environment should be safe for workers' operations. All staff' requirement should be provided by employers to enable smooth working. Employers should categorically put in place the practical terms of the workers and supervise them in their daily activities. Aid to employees should be provided through training to enable them carry out their duties well and achieve the goals of the organization. Employers should keep employment record for solving any dispute and show employment contracts. The companies are required by law to ensure equal job opportunities to all willing and potential employees. The law requires that employers must comply with the legal regulations of the Australian law for examples pay taxes. Employers have the moral obligation of treating employees with dignity and respect. These will enhance their self-esteem and increase their morale. Happy, motivated employees work extra hard to ensure the organization achieves set goals. Remuneration of the employees is imperative to appreciate them of the services rendered. The employers should set best wages and salaries for the employees. They should also reward the efforts by the workers. These will enable them work very hard and be creative and innovative. The organization will eventually find a new market for its products hence increase the customers. The employers must have injury management mechanisms for any damage to the employees and offer employees insurance. Through creativity and innovation, the company will create a blue ocean for all its new products or services offered (Kim Mauborgne, 2004, p.71). Employees Role As employees of the company, I have several obligations both legal and moral. They include: Carry out the activities as prescribed by the employer, work to achieve the goals and interests of the workers. Never disclose the confidential information of the businesses. Ensure confidentiality of the information of the employees. Act in the utmost good faith- this is to ensure that I work as per the interests of the organization. Enable trust by the company due to better service satisfactory to them. Ensure I work carefully and employ the necessary skills in the execution of the duties of the employer.
